Look Hoo's Reading Discussion Day

Personal tools

Hoo’s Kid's Book Fest held their annual Schools Day last Friday with children from seven local schools in Beds and Herts listening to inspiring talks and getting out their pens for creative writing workshops with authors Jon Mayhew and Dave Cousins.

In his workshop Jon Mayhew shared fantastic tips to getting started on an exciting piece of creative writing and talked about his new Monster Odyssey book, The Curse of the Ice Serpent.  Dave Cousins recounted how he wanted to be Batman, a Beatle or go to the moon before finally writing his book 15 Days Without A Head seven years later – “don’t give up” was the strong message!

The day started with our Look Hoo’s Recommended Read for 2015.  After lively debate, passionate presentations and close voting Phil Earle and his stunning book The Bubble Wrap Boy was declared the winner!

Tennyson Road Primary School in Luton won first prize with Micaiah Douglas’s entry for the 247tales Bloomsbury short story writing competition.  They went home with a prize of £100 of Bloomsbury books and shared joint runner up prize with Leagrave Primary School.

The event was also mentioned by Dave Cousins on his blog!

The next Hoo’s Kids Book Fest event will be the Summer Day on Wednesday 29th July with authors, art and lots of activities for a brilliant day out for families at the Luton Hoo Walled Garden.  Tickets and full details will be announced shortly on our website, Twitter@hoosbookfest and on the Hoo’s Kids Book Fest Facebook page.
